Developing context-adequate digital innovations for capacity-building at the micro -and macro-levels will be necessary to reach Global Development Goals.
We work towards a world where decisions are data-driven, resulting in informed decisions backed with validated field-level data to strengthen M&E and increase the value per dollar of extension services. By innovating alongside local partners, AgReach is paving the way for the future of extension while maximizing and building local talent.

Equipping extension systems with digital tools for extension
The AgReach Extension Helper App was developed as a multi-faceted ICT tool to make extension services more accessible and extension systems more efficient for a stronger implementation of the demand-driven approach.
The Extension Helper App is a novel tool that targets several aspects of the extension system with the adaptability to conform to different contexts and provide location-specific coverage. It provides a framework to adjust and cater services towards specific extension programming and promotes the use of technology as extension looks towards more data-rich, objective methods of supporting farmers through demand-driven programming.
In July 2019, the Extension Helper App was piloted in Malawi in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural Extension Services (DAES) and its frontline extension workers. A total of 25 frontline workers were trained on the app package and its data collection functions. Frontline extension workers received training on the three data collection functionalities currently featured on the app – recording individual field visits, group farm visits, and stakeholder platform meetings.
Frontline extension workers were excited for the increased promotion of technology in extension planning and a new level of work visibility to their supervisors, leading to higher work motivation and encouragement.
A larger rollout of the Extension Helper app to 400 frontline extension workers is planned to provide further evidence supporting the app as a tool for extension strengthening throughout the entire extension system.
Aimed at making extension systems more efficient, the AgReach Extension Helper app is a multi-faceted tool designed
to:
1. Improve extension worker’s ability to teach farmers, towards improved adoption of beneficial
technologies & practices
2. Improve data quality towards better M&E and evidence-based planning;
3. Improve coordination, efficiency, and cost- effectiveness of services through mapping activities to determine areas of oversaturation and where access is low;
for strengthened implementation of the demand-driven
approach.
